North Delta Pirates Take Two Against the North Shore Lions in Pre-Season Exhibition Doubleheader

The North Delta Pirates showed their strength in a pre-season doubleheader against the North Shore Lions on Sunday, securing victories in both games, 5-4 and 8-3.

In Game 1, North Shore drew first blood, scoring two runs in the opening inning. However, the North Delta Pirates responded quickly in the bottom of the second, taking a 4-2 lead. Eliaz Murti started the rally with a single to drive in a run, followed by Eric Halliburton getting hit by a pitch to bring in another. Making a triumphant return to the line up after a skiing accident (the second in two consecutive years), Noah Saunders then singled to score two more runs, giving the Pirates the upper hand.

Dakota Simicak was the star on the mound for the North Delta Pirates, holding North Shore to just two runs and no hits over three solid innings, striking out six and earning the win. Kesler Curtis came on in relief in the fourth and pitched three solid innings to close the game. Saunders led the North Delta Pirates’ offence with two RBIs, and Murti, Noah Grant, and Saunders each contributed a hit. North Shore tried to fight back, but ultimately, the North Delta Pirates held on for a 5-4 win.

Game 2 saw a more decisive victory for the North Delta Pirates, as they triumphed 8-3. The Pirates jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs after a combination of two errors by North Shore and a key single from Payton Harper. North Shore responded in the second inning with two runs of their own, as an error and a double resulted in runs to tie the game at 3-3.

However, the North Delta Pirates quickly regained control in the third inning. Curtis singled to center field, and Grant followed with a double, putting the Pirates back in front. Grant started the game at pitcher and after an uncharacteristic second inning that included two walks and a hit batter, he settled into the game and struck out seven on way to a solid four innings, earning the win. Cole James came on in relief for the Pirates, throwing two shutout innings, striking out five and walking two, to close the game. On the other side, the North Shore pitchers gave up eight runs over six innings.

Murti added another solid performance, driving in two RBIs and going 1-for-2, while Curtis led the team with two hits.

The North Delta Pirates’ defense was flawless, with the team not committing a single error.

North Shore was well intentioned but unable to mount a comeback, and the North Delta Pirates took the 8-3 victory.

With the doubleheader sweep, the North Delta Pirates are feeling confident and ready for the season ahead as they head into their last pre-season game against the Vancouver Mounties on Sunday, April 6th at Mackie Park.
