Powerful Pitching by Brendan Grant Not Enough as North Delta Pirates Lose to Ridge Meadows Royals

Even though Brendan Grant struck out 10 batters, the North Delta Pirates still fell to the Ridge Meadows Royals on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.

Please see a recap of the game below:

  • Ridge Meadows was the first to get on the board in the third when Karsten Doran singled, scoring one run.

  • A B. Grant ground out scored a run for the North Delta Pirates in the top of the fourth and the game was notched at one.

  • In the top of the fifth, the North Delta Pirates broke up the tie when Ryo Ikeda doubled, scoring one run. After advancing to third on an error, Ikeda then scored on a wild pitch and North Delta was up 3-1.

  • But in the bottom of the fifth a series of odd plays resulted in Ridge Meadows regaining the lead 4-3. The umpires called a balk by pitcher, scoring a run. Three pitches later B. Grant induced Doran to hit into a fielder’s choice but an error at home plate resulted in another run scoring and North Delta didn’t get the forced out call at first base. To add insult to injury, Ridge Meadows base runners moved further into scoring position and then a third run scored on ground-out. The series of plays had players and fans bewildered and confused and the North Delta Pirates suddenly trailed.

  • A come-back wasn’t to be as Ridge Meadows scored a insurance run in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Tomas Mancini and the North Delta Pirates didn’t have it in them in the seventh as the game ended with two Pirates left on base.

  • Brennan Cragg earned the win for Ridge Meadows. The starting pitcher surrendered one hit and three runs over six innings, striking out six and walking five.

  • Easton Medhurst earned the save.

  • For North Delta, B. Grant struck out 10 batters and surrendered 2 hits and four runs (two earned) over five and two-thirds innings while walking five.

  • B. Grant and Ikeda each drove in one run for the North Delta Pirates.

  • Ikeda led North Delta with one hit in three at bats.

  • North Delta amassed six walks in the game as Sammy Wong and Nathan Strang each had two.

  • Doran went 1-for-3 at the plate as the center fielder led Ridge Meadows with two runs batted in.

  • Sam Lewis led Ridge Meadows with two hits in three at bats.

  • Benoit Lapensee pace Ridge Meadows with two walks and the team had six in the game.

  • Next up for the North Delta Pirates is a game at the Prince George Knights on Saturday in Kamloops.
