North Delta Pirates Fight Back in Loss to Aldergrove BlueSox
The North Delta Pirates effort to come back from down five runs in the sixth inning came up just short, as they fell 6-5 to the Aldergrove BlueSox in a second straight game on Saturday, despite out-hitting Aldergrove eight to seven.
Please see a recap of the game below:
The Aldergrove BlueSox got off to a quick start, opening the scoring in the first after Jackson Rempel singled, scoring two runs.
Aldergrove extended their early lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the second thanks to RBI walks by Damon Bernemann and Vaughn Helmer.
Aldergrove added another run in the third when Brendan Rohrer singled and one more in the sixth on a single. As the game moved into the bottom half of the final inning, Aldergrove had a commanding 6-1 lead.
The North Delta Pirates finally emerged from their slumber in the final inning. Jared Goumans singled, scoring Payton Harper and Tyler Conway and the lead narrowed to 6-3.
Then Sammy Wong hit a ground ball and reached on an error, scoring Brendan Grant and Goumans and the Pirates were back in reach with the score 6-5.
But it wasn’t to be. With Ryo Ikeda pinch hitting for Kyle Sallinen, Ikeda flied out to right field and the game ended in favour of Aldergrove.
Rohrer earned the win for Aldergrove. They surrendered eight hits and five runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out eleven and walking four.
Liam Jones took the loss for North Delta. The starting pitcher went five innings, surrendering five runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking six.
Nathan Strang pitched two innings in relief for North Delta, surrendering one hit, one run and walking two.
Goumans drove the middle of the lineup, leading the North Delta Pirates with two RBI on a 1-for-4 day.
For Aldergrove, Rempel and Helmer were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Aldergrove.
Carson Burns paced Aldergrove with two walks and the team as a whole amassed eight walks in the game.
The North Delta Pirates will put their 5 and 0, undefeated AWAY record on the line when they travel to Vancouver to play a double header in their next two games on Sunday.
