North Delta Pirates Take Lead and Never Look Back in Win Over North Shore Knights

The North Delta Pirates dispatched the North Shore Knights on Thursday at Ambleside Park, 10-3.

  • The North Shore Knights were the first to get on the board in the second when Lachlan Jones doubled, scoring one run.

  • The North Delta Pirates captured the lead, 4-1, in the top of the fourth when Ryo Ikeda drew a walk, scoring one run, Sammy Wong singled, scoring one run, and Tyler Conway singled, scoring two runs.

  • The North Delta Pirates and the North Shore Knights traded two runs a piece in the sixth increasing the score to 6-3.

  • In the seventh the North Delta Pirates took the lead for good, scoring four runs: two on a double by Jared Goumans, one on a double by Wong, and one on a single by Kyle Sallinen.

  • Ikeda opened the game and earned the win for the North Delta Pirates. They gave up two hits and one run over three innings, striking out two and walking two.

  • Brayden Angeles, who moonlighted with the North Delta Pirates during spring training before ultimately deciding to become a Knight, stepped on the hill first for North Shore. They gave up four hits and five runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking two.

  • Nathan Strang threw two shut-out innings in relief for the North Delta Pirates, striking out two and walking zero.

  • In the sixth and seventh innings, Goumans pitched to catcher Wong and then Wong pitched to Goumans. Goumans gave up one hit and two runs, striking out two and walking two. Wong, fans-in-tow and celebrating his 18th birthday, threw a shut-out seventh, walking two and striking out the other three batters.

  • At the plate, Wong and Goumans teamed up to be a formidable pair as each drove in two runs for the North Delta Pirates.

  • Tyler Bernabe, Wong, and Brendan Grant each collected two hits for North Delta.

  • Ikeda stole three bases.

  • Thursday’s game was the last of the regular season for the North Delta Pirates - a season marked by many successes, including a tournament win featuring AAA, College Prep, and PBL teams, and a final regular season record of 27 wins, 12 losses (two of them uncontested due to graduation obligations), and 1 tie. With the wind in their sales and their sights set on a provincial title, the North Delta Pirates will see if they are able to ride the ultimate wave to gold during the BC Provincial AAA tournament July 25 - July 28.
